Touti: the complete card game rules (and where to play online)

By The Atlas Carta teamUpdated on ✓ Rules checked in the app

Touti is a trick-taking and bidding game for four players in two teams of two, played with a 40-card Spanish deck. Below are the complete rules exactly as they apply in the Atlas Carta (Touti, Ronda, Rami, Belote) app: card values, bidding and partner signals, trumps, the rules of play, the Ghna and scoring.

What is Touti?

Touti is a team trick-taking game: Aces and Threes are worth a lot, you win tricks to collect points, and one team commits through a bid to scoring a minimum number of them. What makes Touti special is the conversation with your partner during the auction, and the Ghna: the Rey and Cabal of the same suit, a declaration that can swing a whole hand.

Online Touti game for four players: a trick being played in the middle of the table

A game is played over several hands. In each hand, all 40 cards are dealt, players bid, the winning bidder chooses trumps, and the 10 tricks are played. Points are then counted, and the team that wins the hand adds the bid amount to its score. The first team to reach 600 points wins the game.

Cards and teams

The 40-card Spanish deck

Touti uses the 40-card Spanish deck: four suits (oros = coins, copas = cups, espadas = swords and bastos = clubs) of ten cards each. Each suit has an Ace, the 2 to 7, then three court cards: the Sota (numbered 10), the Cabal (11, a knight on horseback) and the Rey (12, the king). There are no 8s or 9s. Full details on the Touti cards page.

The cards that score points: Ace, 3, Rey, Cabal and Sota (shown here across all four suits).

Seating the teams

Four players, two teams of two. Partners sit opposite each other, so the two teams alternate around the table. Each player gets 10 cards, so a hand always has exactly 10 tricks.

Who deals, who bids first, who leads

  • One player deals all 40 cards: 10 each.
  • The player after the dealer in the order of play speaks first in the auction, then bidding goes round the table.
  • That same player leads the first trick, whoever won the auction.
  • At the next hand, the deal passes to the next player. This also happens after a cancelled deal (when everyone passed): the cards are never redealt by the same dealer.

Card values and ranking

Two things not to confuse: a card's value (the points it gives the team that wins it) and its rank (its power to win the trick).

Points table (120 in total)

Total30× 4 suits = 120

Ranking

From strongest to weakest within each suit: Ace > 3 > Rey > Cabal > Sota > 7 > 6 > 5 > 4 > 2.

Classic trap: rank is not the same as points

Bidding

After the deal, each player in turn says how many points their team commits to winning in the hand. The full guide, with example hands, is on the Touti bidding page.

From 70 to 230, in steps of 10

The first bid must be at least 70. Every new bid must beat the previous one by at least 10: 80, 90, 100… up to 230, the maximum (120 card points + 10 for the last trick + every possible Ghna). You cannot bid 75 or 85.

Passing takes you out of the auction

On your turn, you either raise or pass. A player who passes can't bid again in that hand. Bidding continues among the remaining players and ends when only one bidder is left: they become the declarer (the winning bidder), and their bid becomes their team's contract.

Everyone passes: redeal

If all four players pass without anyone bidding, the hand is cancelled: nobody scores, the deal passes to the next player and the cards are dealt again.

Partner signals: AS, COMPTE, +10, PASS

A player who has already left the auction can still help their partner by sending a signal. All of these conditions must be met:

  • the player signalling has already left the auction (by passing or by an early announcement);
  • it is their partner's turn to bid, and that partner is still in;
  • a bid has already been made in this hand;
  • at least one opponent is still in;
  • they have not already signalled at this bid level: if an opponent raises, they can signal again at the new level.

SignalWhat it means
ASI have an Ace.
COMPTEI have a Ghna (Rey + Cabal of the same suit).
+10I can bring you about 10 more points.
PASSI can't help you any more: don't count on me.

On their own turn, instead of bidding, a player can also announce AS or COMPTE straight away. This early announcement counts as a pass, but it tells their partner what they hold. It is allowed only once per hand, and only if the player has not sent any signal yet in that hand. It can even be made before the very first bid.

Partner signal in Touti: “Do you have a count?” — “Yes!”

Choosing trumps

The declarer chooses the trump suit from oros, copas, espadas and bastos. For the whole hand, any trump card beats any card of another suit. Players usually choose their longest suit, or the suit in which they hold a Ghna (which is then worth 40 instead of 20).

Playing a hand

Who leads

The first trick is led by the player after the dealer (the one who spoke first in the auction), whether or not their team won the bid. After that, whoever wins a trick leads the next one.

Follow suit… and play higher

If you have cards of the suit led, you must play one, and you must play higher: a card stronger than the highest card of that suit already played, if you have one. If you cannot beat it, you still follow suit.

The only exception: if the trick has already been trumped (and the suit led is not trumps), the obligation to play higher disappears: you can follow with any card of the suit led.

Trumping and overtrumping

If you can't follow suit, you must trump. If a trump has already been played to the trick, you must overtrump (play a higher trump) if you can; otherwise you still play a trump. Note: this applies even when your partner is winning the trick.

When can you discard freely?

Only when you have neither the suit led nor any trumps. You then play any card you like: usually a low card with no value, or points if your partner is winning the trick.

Who wins the trick

The trick goes to the highest trump if any were played, otherwise to the highest card of the suit led. A card of another suit (a discard) never wins.

The Ghna

The Ghna (also called "compte") is holding the Rey and Cabal of the same suit in one player's hand. It is worth +40 in the trump suit and +20 in any other suit. Full details on the Ghna in Touti.

  • Rey of cupsRey of cups
  • Cabal of cupsCabal of cups
A Ghna in copas: Rey + Cabal of the same suit. +40 if copas are trumps, +20 otherwise.

Who can declare it, and when

  • Only the declaring team can declare a Ghna; the defenders never score one.
  • It is declared after a trick won by your team, one Ghna per trick won.
  • You must still hold both cards: if you've already played the Rey or the Cabal of that suit, that Ghna is lost.
  • Declaring is optional: the player holding the Ghna decides whether to declare it after a trick won.

Caps depending on the bid

Ghna allowed depending on the bid
BidGhna that count
70None
80A single Ghna of 20 (not in trumps); the +40 does not count
90Up to 40 in total (one +40, or two +20)
100 and aboveAll of them

At 90, the cap of 40 gives a real choice to a team holding both a Ghna in trumps and Ghna in other suits: either one +40 or two +20. The first Ghna declared decides: after a +20, the +40 no longer fits under the cap.

Scoring

After the 10 tricks, each team adds up its points. For full details and a hand calculator, see how to score Touti.

Last trick: +10

The team that wins the tenth and last trick adds 10 points. A team's points = the cards in its tricks + 10 if it won the last trick + its Ghna (declaring team only).

Contract made or failed

  • If the declaring team collects at least its bid, the contract is made: it scores the bid amount, and the defenders score nothing.
  • Otherwise the contract fails: the defenders score the bid amount, and the declaring team scores nothing.

Winning the game at 600

Hands are played one after another. The first team to reach 600 points wins the game.

A hand, step by step

North holds the Rey and Cabal of copas, the Ace and 3 of copas, and two Aces in other suits. North opens at 70. East raises to 80; South (North's partner) has already passed but signals AS. West passes. North knows the team has all four Aces and a Ghna, so raises to 100 so the Ghna counts in full. East passes: North wins the auction at 100 and chooses copas as trumps.

The heart of North's hand: Ace, 3, Rey and Cabal of copas (trumps), Ace of oros and Ace of bastos.
  1. Trick 1: the first trick is led in oros. North plays the Ace of oros, which nobody can beat, and wins the trick. Since the team has just won a trick, North declares the Ghna in trumps: +40.
  2. Trick 2: North, having won the trick, leads the Ace of copas (trumps). Anyone holding trumps must follow and play higher if possible, but nothing beats the Ace: the opponents' trumps start to fall.
  3. Trick 3: North continues with the 3 of copas, now the master card. North has "drawn" the opponents' trumps before playing the other suits.
  4. End of the hand: North-South total 74 card points + 10 (last trick) + 40 (Ghna) = 124, above 100: they score 100. The defenders, with 46 points, score nothing.

Frequently asked questions

How many players does Touti need?

Four players, split into two teams of two. Partners sit opposite each other.

What cards are used to play Touti?

The 40-card Spanish deck: oros, copas, espadas and bastos, from Ace to 7 plus Sota, Cabal and Rey (no 8s or 9s). Each player gets 10 cards.

How much is each card worth in Touti?

Ace 11, 3 = 10, Rey 4, Cabal 3, Sota 2; the 7, 6, 5, 4 and 2 are worth 0. That makes 30 points per suit and 120 in the whole deck.

What are the minimum and maximum bids?

Bidding starts at 70 and goes up in steps of 10 to a maximum of 230.

What happens if everyone passes?

If all four players pass without a bid, the hand is cancelled and the cards are redealt.

What is a Ghna in Touti?

The Rey and Cabal of the same suit in one player's hand. It is worth +40 in trumps and +20 in another suit, only for the declaring team, with caps linked to the bid (none at 70, a single +20 at 80, up to 40 at 90, all from 100).

Do you have to trump in Touti?

Yes: if you can't follow suit and you have trumps, you must trump, and overtrump if a trump has already been played and you can beat it. This applies even if your partner is winning the trick.

How do you win a game of Touti?

In each hand, the team that wins it (the declarers if they make their contract, otherwise the defenders) adds the bid amount to its score. The first team to 600 wins.
