Atlas Carta — Touti, Ronda, Rami, Belote

Rummy online, with friends or as a team

By The Atlas Carta teamUpdated on ✓ Rules checked in the app

Rummy (also spelled rummi, rami or ramy) is the card game where you sort your hand into runs (7♥ 8♥ 9♥) and sets (9♠ 9♥ 9♦) to get rid of it before everyone else. In the Atlas Carta app it comes in three variants (Simple, Rummy 51, Rummy 71) and two formats: a 1v1 duel and partners rummy, 2 vs 2, with your teammate sitting opposite you. Rummy is available in the app; every rule is explained here.

Rummy in a nutshell

Each player gets 13 to 15 cards depending on the variant. On your turn you draw one card (from the stock or the discard pile), lay down melds if you can, then discard one card. There are two kinds of meld:

  • the [Tria](/rami/lexique#tria), or set (9♠ 9♥ 9♦): three or four cards of the same rank, all in different suits.

A Tria, or set (9♠ 9♥ 9♦): same rank, three different suits.

The joker stands in for any card, one per meld. The first player to get rid of all their cards ends the round; the other side then takes penalty points, and whoever reaches the limit loses the game. Every detail is in the complete rummy rules.

Simple rummy: go out in one move

You keep every meld hidden in your hand. When all your cards but one are sorted, with at least one Suivi (5♥ 6♥ 7♥) and one Tria (7♠ 7♥ 7♦), you lay everything down and discard the last card. No points to count before going out, and fixed scoring: each loser takes 100 points. The quickest variant to learn. → Simple rummy rules

Rummy 51: open with 51 points

The most popular variant. Your first lay-down, the opening, must be worth at least 51 points, with no specific meld required; after that you lay down and add to melds all over the table. The bar rises for the other side: they must open with at least your total + 1. → Rummy 51 in detail

Rummy 71: the no-joker challenge

To open you need 71 points without jokers, including a Suivi (9♦ 10♦ J♦) and a Tria (K♠ K♥ K♣). Tougher and more tactical: you wait longer, and every discard matters. → Rummy 71 in detail

1v1 or 2v2

Every variant comes in two formats, with exactly the same cards and the same deal.

1 vs 1

Two players head to head. When one goes out, the other pays: a fixed 100 points in Simple; in Rummy 51 and 71, the cards left in hand (or 100 points if nothing has been laid down yet). The first to reach 300 points in Simple or 251 in Rummy 51 and 71 penalty points loses.

2 vs 2 with a partner

Four players, two teams, partners sitting opposite each other. Once one of you has opened, the other can lay down without reaching the threshold. When a player goes out, only the opposing team pays (a fixed 200 in Simple), and the team that reaches 600 points in Simple, 351 in Rummy 51 or 451 in Rummy 71 loses. Few online rummy games offer this four-player team version: → partners rummy explained.

What the Atlas Carta app adds to rummy

  • Rules enforced by the engine: the app refuses any invalid meld, so nobody can bend the rules.
  • Real team rummy: 2 vs 2 with your partner opposite you, on top of the duel.
  • A tournament every evening for each variant: Simple, Rummy 51 and Rummy 71 each have their own.
  • Weekly leagues: seven leagues to climb, week after week.
  • Guided hands to learn melds and the opening step by step.
  • One app for Touti, Ronda, Rummy and Belote.

Why play rummy on Atlas Carta?

Because rummy has always been a table game, a family game and a game of debates — “are we playing 51 or 71?”, “what is the joker worth?” — and Atlas Carta keeps the spirit without the arguments. The three variants people know from the kitchen table, Simple, Rummy 51 and Rummy 71, are fixed once and for all and enforced by the game engine: a run (K♥ A♥ 2♥) that goes round the corner is refused, so is a set (9♠ 9♥ 9♥) with two identical cards, and the rising threshold is worked out for you. You can focus on what makes rummy great: reading the discard pile, guessing what the others are building, choosing the right moment to lay down.

Above all, Atlas Carta plays four-handed team rummy, just like at home: your partner opposite, your penalties shared, an opening that frees your teammate. You meet your friends in the same app as Touti, Ronda and Belote, with a single account. And if you want to prepare your games, everything is here: the rules, scoring, strategy and the glossary.
