The joker in rummy: everything you need to know

By The Atlas Carta teamUpdated on ✓ Rules checked in the app

The joker is the most wanted card in rummy: it stands in for any card and turns a shaky hand into a winning one. But it has rules of its own, and they change with the variant. Here is exactly how it works in the Atlas Carta app, in Simple, Rummy 51 and Rummy 71.

How many jokers are in the deck?

Rummy is played with two 52-card decks shuffled together, plus jokers. How many depends on the variant, and it matters: the more jokers, the faster hands come together.

Number of jokers by variant (Atlas Carta app)
VariantJokersFull deck
Simple2106 cards
Rummy 514108 cards
Rummy 712106 cards

With four jokers, Rummy 51 is the fastest variant: openings come early and rounds are often decided by a card or two. In Rummy 71 there are only two jokers, and they cannot even be used to open: it is the most demanding game.

Where can you put the joker?

The joker replaces any card in both rummy melds: the Suivi, a run such as (5♥ 6♥ 7♥) — consecutive cards of one suit — and the Tria, a set such as (9♠ 9♥ 9♦) — one rank in all-different suits.

In a Suivi: in the middle or at the end

In a Suivi (6♦ joker 8♦), the joker can fill a gap in the middle: it stands for the 7♦. It can also extend the run (9♣ 10♣ J♣) at one end: a Suivi (9♣ 10♣ joker) makes it the Jack of clubs, or the 8♣ if you choose to put it at the bottom. The usual rules still apply: the Ace is low (A-2-3) or high (Q-K-A), never both, and a run (K♥ A♥ 2♥) stays illegal, joker or not.

In a Tria

The joker is also allowed in a Tria (7♠ 7♥ joker): it takes the place of a 7 in a missing suit. A Tria (7♠ 7♥ 7♦ 7♣) always has 3 or 4 cards in total, joker included, and the natural cards must stay in different suits.

Only one joker per meld

Never two jokers in the same meld. A Suivi (6♦ joker 8♦) is fine; (6♦ joker joker) is not. A meld must also contain at least one natural card. If you hold two jokers, you need two different melds to place them — for example a Suivi (3♠ 4♠ joker) and a Tria (Q♠ Q♦ joker).

What is the joker worth when opening?

This is the question that splits rummy tables the most. In the Atlas Carta app, the answer depends on the variant.

VariantThe joker when openingExample
Rummy 51Worth the card it replacesSuivi (6♦ joker 8♦) = 6 + 7 + 8 = 21
Rummy 71Counts neither toward the 71 points nor for the required Suivi and TriaLaid down on top, it counts in the total to beat
SimpleNo opening points: allowed everywhereThe required Suivi and Tria may contain a joker

Rummy 51: the value of the card it replaces

In Rummy 51, the joker counts exactly like the card it represents. A Suivi (6♦ joker 8♦) is worth 21 points; a Tria (7♠ 7♥ joker) is worth 21 too. A joker playing a King, a Queen or a high Ace is worth 10. No meld is required to open: only the total counts, jokers included.

Example: Suivi (10♥ J♥ joker K♥) = 10 + 10 + 10 + 10 = 40, plus Tria (4♠ 4♥ 4♣) = 12: 52 points, the opening is valid. To check your own hands, use the opening calculator.

Rummy 71: the joker comes on top

In Rummy 71, the opening must gather 71 points, a Suivi (8♠ 9♠ 10♠) and a Tria (6♠ 6♥ 6♣), all without jokers. So the joker cannot make up for what is missing. However, once those conditions are met with natural cards, you may lay down extra melds with jokers in the same opening: they add to the total, and that total, jokers included, is what the other team must beat by at least 1 point to open in turn.

Simple: allowed everywhere

Simple rummy has no opening points: you keep everything in hand and lay it all down at once to go out, with at least a Suivi (5♥ 6♥ 7♥) and a Tria (4♠ 4♥ 4♦). The joker is allowed everywhere, including in those two required melds: a Suivi (2♣ 3♣ joker 5♣) is enough as the going-out run (2♣ 3♣ 4♣ 5♣).

Swapping a joker on the table

In Rummy 51 and Rummy 71, a joker on the table is not lost forever: you can take it back by replacing it. The conditions are strict:

  • Only a player who has already melded (opened) can swap a joker.
  • They replace it with exactly the card the joker represents: in a Suivi (6♦ joker 8♦), only the 7♦ frees the joker.
  • The swap happens on your turn, after drawing, and never during the very first round of the deal.
  • The recovered joker goes into your hand: play it whenever you like, the same turn or later.
  • You can swap the joker of any meld on the table, opponents’ melds included.

The Tria (6♠ 6♥ 6♦ 6♣) case. A joker in a Tria can only be swapped when it is the fourth card, that is, when three natural cards are already down. With a Tria (6♠ 6♥ 6♦ joker), the 6♣ takes the joker’s place and the joker goes back to your hand. With a Tria (6♠ joker 6♦), on the other hand, a 6♥ or 6♣ is simply added to the meld and the joker stays.

Discarded jokers, the tournante and the penalty

  • A discarded joker can never be taken back. On the discard pile it is lost to everyone: nobody can pick it up, not even to meld it straight away.
  • A joker is never the tournante. If the dealer throws a joker as the very first card, it goes straight onto the discard pile and there is no tournante that round.
  • Left in hand, it costs 20 points in Rummy 51 and Rummy 71 when an opponent goes out (unless you have not melded at all: you then pay a flat 100).
  • In Simple, each losing player pays a fixed 100 points, whatever their hand (200 for the team in 2 vs 2): a joker in hand changes nothing.

Playing your joker well: 6 tips

  1. Almost never discard a joker. It will not come back, and it could have completed any meld.
  2. In Rummy 51, put it where it pays most: as a King or high Ace in a Suivi (Q♥ K♥ joker), it is worth 10 opening points.
  3. In Rummy 71, do not count on it to open. Build your natural Suivi (7♣ 8♣ 9♣) and Tria (J♠ J♥ J♦) first, and keep the joker for later.
  4. Watch your opponents’ jokers. If you have opened and hold the exact card a joker stands for, the swap gives you a wild card.
  5. Avoid laying a joker that is easy to free once your opponents have opened: a joker in the middle of a Suivi (4♠ joker 6♠) is just waiting for its 5♠.
  6. Do not sit on it too long in Rummy 51 and 71 when the round speeds up: 20 points in hand hurts when an opponent is down to one card.

Jokers elsewhere: very different rules

The joker is probably the card whose rules change most from one table to the next. Elsewhere, people sometimes play with a joker worth 0 points when opening, or one that costs 25 or 30 points left in hand. Many families also require a pure run — a run without a joker, such as (4♦ 5♦ 6♦) — to open at 51, or ban jokers from sets such as (7♠ 7♥ 7♣). Some allow swapping a joker before you have even opened.

In the Atlas Carta app the rules are fixed and applied automatically: the ones on this page. To compare the big rummy families, read rummy variants; for everything else, the complete rummy rules.

Frequently asked questions

How many jokers are there in rummy?

In the Atlas Carta app: 2 jokers in Simple and Rummy 71 (106 cards), 4 jokers in Rummy 51 (108 cards). Only one joker is allowed per meld.

What is the joker worth in Rummy 51?

The value of the card it replaces: a Suivi (6♦ joker 8♦) is worth 21 points, and so is a Tria (7♠ 7♥ joker).

Does the joker count in Rummy 71?

Not toward the 71 points, nor for the required Suivi (8♠ 9♠ 10♠) and Tria (Q♠ Q♥ Q♦), which are made without jokers. Joker melds laid down on top count in the total the opponents must beat.

Can you take a joker back from the table?

Yes, in Rummy 51 and 71, if you have already melded: replace it with exactly the card it represents. In a Tria (6♠ 6♥ 6♦ joker), only when it is the fourth card.

Can you pick up a discarded joker?

No. A joker thrown on the discard pile can never be taken back, and it is never the tournante.

How much does a joker left in hand cost?

20 points in Rummy 51 and Rummy 71 (a flat 100 if you have not melded). In Simple, each loser pays a fixed 100 points, whatever their hand.
