Rummy 51: how to open with 51 points

By The Atlas Carta teamUpdated on ✓ Rules checked in the app

Rummy 51 (also called Talaj 51) is the classic opening-threshold rummy: before you can lay down your first cards, your melds must add up to at least 51 points. Here is exactly how it is played in the Atlas Carta app, with worked openings and a calculator to test your own hands.

The basics (draw, meld, discard; runs such as (7♥ 8♥ 9♥) and sets such as (9♠ 9♥ 9♦)) are the same in every variant: if you are new, start with the complete rummy rules.

How to open in Rummy 51

To open, you lay down in one go one or more valid melds totalling 51 points or more. No meld is mandatory: two sets (K♠ K♥ K♦ and Q♠ Q♥ Q♣) are enough if they reach the total, and so is one long run (8♥ 9♥ 10♥ J♥ Q♥ K♥). The app checks the whole opening at once before showing it to the other players.

Only two limits: nobody opens during the very first round of turns (nothing is laid down until play returns to the dealer), and your opening must leave you at least one card in hand to go out later.

The joker is worth the card it replaces

In Rummy 51 the joker is a real help for opening: it takes the value of the card it stands for. A Suivi, or run (6♦ joker 8♦), is worth 6 + 7 + 8 = 21 points; a Tria, or set (7♠ 7♥ joker), is worth 7 + 7 + 7 = 21 points. And the Rummy 51 pack holds 4 of them instead of 2: two more than in Simple and Rummy 71.

Check your opening

Tap the cards of each meld and confirm them one by one: the calculator uses the same rules as the app (valid melds, joker value, threshold). For penalties and the score sheet, head to the rummy scoring page.

The rising threshold

The first side to open sets the bar: the other side must open with at least that total + 1. If team A opens with 63 points, team B needs 64. Opening high therefore puts pressure on your opponents.

The threshold uses the real total of the opening, jokers included. It does not apply to the partner of a player who has already opened (see below).

After opening: lay down and add anywhere

Once you have opened, you are free: on each of your turns you can lay new melds with no minimum, and add cards to every player’s melds, opponents included. You can also swap a joker on the table for the exact card it replaces, and keep it for later.

One constraint only: always keep at least one card in hand. Discarding it ends the round.

Taking the discard: only to lay it down

In Rummy 51 you can take the face-up discard instead of drawing, as long as you lay it down that same turn: in your opening, a new meld or as an add-on. If you can’t, you give it back and draw from the stock. A picked-up card can never be discarded in the same turn, a discarded joker is never taken back, and with one card in hand you always draw from the stock.

The tournante

At the start of each round, the dealer’s first discard is set aside: this is the tournante. During the first round of turns, each player can take it as their draw, or leave it and draw from the stock. Nobody lays down during that first round; if nobody keeps the tournante, it goes under the discard pile when play returns to the dealer.

Laying everything down, even under 51

One important exception: if you can lay down all your cards but one in a single move, you may do so even if the total is below 51 (or the current threshold), then discard your last card and win. If you had not laid anything down before, that is going rummy: it is allowed, and your opponents’ penalties are not doubled.

In teams: your partner lays down freely

In 2 vs 2, as soon as your partner has opened, you lay down freely: no threshold, no required meld. You share the same score, so helping your partner go out fast is often the best plan. All the team rules: partners rummy, 2 vs 2.

Frequently asked questions

Do you need a pure run in Rummy 51?

Not in the Atlas Carta app. In Rummy 51 no meld is required: only the 51 points count, and jokers can be part of them.

Does the joker count toward the 51 points?

Yes. In Rummy 51, the joker is worth the card it replaces: 6, joker, 8 of diamonds is worth 21 points.

Can you open with less than 51?

Only to lay everything down at once: if you put down all your cards but one, you may do it under 51, then discard your last card. Otherwise you need at least 51 points, or the current threshold if the other side has already opened.

Do cards added to other players’ melds count toward the 51?

No. The opening is made of your own melds. Adding to the table is only allowed once you have opened.

How much is the Ace worth in Rummy 51?

1 point at the bottom of a run (A♥ 2♥ 3♥), 10 points at the top of a run (Q♦ K♦ A♦) or in a set (A♠ A♥ A♣).

How many jokers are there in Rummy 51?

Four. The pack is two 52-card decks plus 4 jokers, 108 cards in all. Only one joker is allowed per meld.
