First, the app’s rules
For comparison, here is the base applied to every game in the app. All these rules are detailed on the Touti rules page.
| Rule | In the app |
|---|---|
| Players | 4, in 2 teams of partners sitting opposite each other |
| Cards | 40-card Spanish deck, 10 per player |
| Bidding | From 70 to 230, in steps of 10; passing takes you out of the auction |
| Partner signals | AS, COMPTE, +10 and PASS, under precise conditions |
| Play | Follow suit and play higher; trump and overtrump; free discard only with neither the suit nor trumps |
| Ghna | +40 in trumps, +20 otherwise, declaring team only, capped by the bid |
| Last trick | +10 |
| Scoring | Only one team scores per hand: the bid amount |
| End of the game | 600 points (tournaments may be played to fewer points) |
Variant 1: playing to 500, to 1000… or a set number of hands
The target score is the easiest house rule to change. A game to 500 is shorter and more nervy; a game to 1000 leaves time to come back from a big deficit. Some people also prefer to play a fixed number of hands and count the points at the end.
Variant 2: opening at 60 (or lower)
Some tables allow an opening bid of 60. It lets you take the contract with an average hand and cuts down the number of deals where everyone passes. On the other hand, contracts become easier to make, and each hand weighs less on the score.
Variant 3: uncapped Ghna
In a simpler version, every Ghna (Rey + Cabal of the same suit) always counts, whatever the bid. Hands at 70 then become much more attractive for the team holding a Ghna in trumps, and the auction loses some of its suspense.
Variant 4: no obligation to play higher
Some players just follow suit, without having to play a higher card. The game becomes more flexible: you can keep your 3 or your Rey for later. But it also becomes harder to bring down the opponents' master cards.
Variant 5: each team scores its own points
Another way of keeping score is to write down, in each hand, the points each team actually collected, with a penalty for the declaring team if it fails. The score rises more steadily, but the bid matters less.
Variant 6: free talk, or no signals at all
Around a real table, how much partners may communicate during the auction varies a lot: some forbid any exchange, others let people talk freely. Both extremes change the game deeply.
Playing with house rules: our advice
- Agree before the first deal: target score, minimum bid, Ghna caps, obligation to play higher.
- Keep the points consistent: there are 120 card points, 10 for the last trick and at most 100 points of Ghna, so 230 in total. A maximum bid above that would make no sense.
- Write the scores down: our online score sheet follows the app’s rules and saves you arguments over the maths.
- Change one rule at a time: the best way to see what it really brings.

Frequently asked questions
Is there a single "real" set of Touti rules?
No. Touti is mostly passed on from player to player, and every table can have its own habits. This page presents the rules applied in the app and a few variants met among friends.
Can I play a game to 1000 points in the app?
No: in the app, a game is played to 600 points (some tournaments are played to fewer points). A game to 1000 is still possible among friends with a real deck, and our score sheet helps you count the hands.
Can I open the bidding at 60 in the app?
No, bidding starts at 70 and goes up in steps of 10 to 230.
Why does the app cap the Ghna?
To make the auction decisive: the cap ties the value of the Ghna to the bid (no Ghna at 70, a single +20 at 80, 40 at most at 90, all of them from 100).
